008 VISP Using LabVIEW FPGA on Wall Street

Play

In this episode of the VI Shots podcast I sit down with Terry Stratoudakis who is the CEO of Wall Street FPGA. A company that specializes in the acceleration of trading and financial analytics software using LabVIEW FPGA.

This is a new industry in general for LabVIEW and specifically LabVIEW FPGA. I was skeptical at first and a little confused. Where exactly are FPGAs used here? No worries, Terry explains it all to us. By the end of the interview, I was all fired up to find other untapped industries where I could use LabVIEW FPGA.

There is a lot of information packed in this podcast episode so you might want to listen to it more than once.

PS: Terry will be at NIWeek this year giving an unrelated presentation (TS3261-The Missing Link – 8/3/11 1:00 PM – Rm: 10C). So track him down if you’re there.

He started his career as a test engineer and quickly fell in love with the graphical programming paradigm that LabVIEW provided. Since then, he’s worked on or developed an incredible number of complex test systems in electronics, semiconductor, automotive, telecom, biomedical and other industries. He’s an Certified LabVIEW Architect and a Certified LabVIEW Instructor. He also has the distinction of being among a select few LabVIEW Champions. In 2002, he created the LAVA Forums which have now become the largest independent online LabVIEW community. Email Me

I was just reading about bitcoin mining this morning. I wonder how an FPGA implementation would match up against some of the GPU setups?

Interesting, this is the first time I am hearing about bitcoin mining.  Going to search for a description of this algorithm; if you have a link, please share.

A bit of searching turned up the bitcoin wikihttps://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_PageThere is even a forum with FPGA http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=9047.0

This was very interesting, it is a good example of “LabVIEW Everywhere”. It made me think about what other areas we could be using LabVIEW.

Thanks for yet another excellent podcast.

Weird, that I only a week after a VHDL training I now stumbled across this podcast. I have a hunch that LabVIEW FPGA can be applied to boosting the whole bunch of Machine Learning methods and algos. That would be quite a blast.

Thanks Markus. However, it seems like NI is not interested in these markets. Not sure why but they want to keep marketing FPGA to traditional (for them) industries.

There is a new hedge run by engineers that is currently using LabVIEW for Windows to run algorithmic trading and strategy analysis. Their motivation for using LabVIEW is that 1) coming from the aerospace industry it is their ‘native’ programming language and 2) rapid development. The fund has received some seed funding and the LabVIEW based trading program is live!
